Deodorant often gets a bad rap. It’s associated with harsh ingredients, and potentially bad health risks. But, it’s something we all need in our beauty routine in order to stay stink free. So, a few years ago I went on a quest to find a healthy alternative to traditional deodorants. I tried what seemed like every brand on the shelf, and had some pretty horrendous results. Some stunk like bug spray, and some made my under arms painfully itchy. Eventually, I found a brand that works, and although I’ve mentioned it in passing, I’ve never devoted a full post to it – until now!
LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant retails for $14 (2 oz) at Sephora and lavanila.com. It comes in 9 different scents, including one that’s fragrance free, and it’s an Allure Best of Beauty winner. What sets it apart from traditional deodorants, is that it’s formulated without aluminum, parabens, and propylene glycol.
A solution to traditional deodorants and antiperspirants that can contain potentially harmful and irritating ingredients, Our health-promoting formula is packed with anti-oxidants and a proprietary beta glucan technology to not only fight odor, but nourish, strengthen, and soothe the skin.” LAVANILA
The texture of this deodorant is smooth, and easy to apply. It’s not drying or wet, and it leaves my sensitive underarms hydrated and free of irritation. It can even be applied after shaving, without any pesky bumps appearing. It’s a solid deodorant though, so it can (and will) leave marks on clothes if you’re not careful.
The most popular question asked whenever I talk about this deodorant, is if it actually works. My answer, is yes and no. It’s a great product for use in the fall, winter, and spring, as it keeps me dry and stink free all day. Its even been my go-to deodorant during my entire pregnancy, and I’ve never sweated through it – which says a lot considering my hormones are raging 😉
When this product doesn’t work so great, is in the dead of summer. At least, here in South Florida. It gets dreadfully hot and humid, with temps in the triple digits. Although this product has never made me stink (even on a 100 degree day), I do tend to sweat through it when it’s extremely hot out. If you’re rocking a strapless shirt, that might not be so bad, but if you’re dressed professionally wet marks on your underarms isn’t ideal.
Depending on where you live, The Healthy Deodorant is a great pick for at least 3/4 of the year, with a trusty stand-by needed for when the heat really soars.
Personally, I don’t mind having to have a back up when it’s really hot, and even then I usually stick to the LAVANILA on the weekends if I’m just going to be lounging around the house. It’s free of harsh chemicals, doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin, and it actually keeps me dry and smelling great. I highly recommend!
Have you tried the LAVANILA deodorants? Which one do you like best?

I absolutely love their deodorants! I have 3 or 4 of them, and reach for them all of the time!
I love the vanilla coconut scent!
I haven’t tried any of the better for you deodorants though it has been on my mind. I wish LaVaniila wasn’t a solid and didn’t leave white marks. Wish they had a gel.
I hope they expand their range. I often forget when I’m in a hurry, and then see the pesky white marks on my shirt. But, the formula itself is nice!
I haven’t heard of these deodorants before, but I would love to try them, although the white marks thing is bit scary.
The white marks aren’t usually an issue if you wait about 5 minutes before getting dressed, but it can certainly be a hassle if you’re in a rush!
I’ve been wanting to try these. I’ve used the crystal deodorant (actually, I think it’s technically an antiperspirant) but it’s just not the same.
I used the Crystal deodorant for a while before discovering this one, and it’s definitely different, though I thought it worked pretty good as well!
I hate when they leave marks =( Still, this is one I’ve been wanting to try out…
Ugh yeah, here’s hoping they make a invisible solid one day!
It’s pretty cold here in NYC so I think it would be great to try this out around this time of year!
I think so too!
I heard/read nice things about this deodorant. I should give it a try one day
You should!
Great post! I too have success with these 3/4ths of the year! Summer requires a true AP. The LaVanilas really do leave your underarm skin feeling calm and smelling really nice.
I love their scents! But yeah, dead of summer is iffy with these lol
I am definitely purchasing this from Sephora now 😀 awesome review
